Natural Climate Solutions
Keeping 1.5°C Alive: Closing the Gap in the 2020s, version 1.0, published by the Energy Transitions Commission in September 2021, defines Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) as: ‘Actions considered to be a subset of nature-based solutions (NBS) with a specific focus on addressing climate change. NCS has been defined as “conservation, restoration, and/ or improved land management actions to increase carbon storage and/or avoid greenhouse gas emissions across global forests, wetlands, grasslands, agricultural lands, and oceans” (Ref Griscom et al. (2017), Natural Climate Solutions). NCS can be coupled with technology to secure long-term or permanent storage of GHGs (greenhouse gases), examples include CCS (carbon capture and storage), the use of technologies such as torrefaction to process biomass or monitoring to improve forest management techniques for increased density.’
